Bollywood dance is not a particular style of belly dancing but rather a fusion of Western dance with classical Indian dance that also combines many other movements from folkloric dancers and more modern dances such as jazz, funk, hip-hop, samba, and salsa.
This dance comes from the cinematographic choreographies that are performed in Bombay in Hollywood style. These films are characterized by being productions with many musical scenes that include large group or partner dances that are very cheerful, fun, and colorful, mixing traditional dances and songs of India, such as the classic Bharatanatyam or the Bhangra of Punjab, with choreographies more typical of Western pop.
Some belly dancing concepts originated from India thousands of years ago. The nomadic gypsies of northern India took the movements around the world and mixed them with other influences, thus separating them from the dances that would form the most modern Indian dance. There are even many female Hindu sculptures with Western dance poses and adorned with coin belts, as well as great similarities of techniques between belly dancing and yoga, both of which activate the chakras and the center of body energy.
The music used in Bollywood dance may be modern or traditional Indian music that may also be influenced by American compositions or use traditional Arab instruments.
The wardrobe is bright and colorful, mixing Hollywood fantasy with traditional Arab and Indian aesthetics. Jewelry accessories abound, such as nose rings, necklaces, earrings, ankle bracelets, rings and other hand adornments, a multitude of wristbands and bracelets, bindis, and shawls, accompanying the traditional silk sari with choli underneath.
Bollywood dance is gaining more fans and is has become very popular thanks to movies and the fact that it is a dance suitable for all ages, offering the advantage of maintaining good physical fitness without being a high-impact exercise. Today, Bollywood dance is often taught in dance camps and performed by dance tours around the world.
