Hackers In Ukraine Steal Personal Information of Thousands of People
At a time when the Internet rules the world, the biggest nightmare one can have is losing all his important data like bank account details, credit card details, social media passwords, etc. to any unknown person. This is what happened to hundreds of thousands of people in Ukraine recently. Many of them fell prey to cybercrime attack which was carried out by a group of hackers. The matter came to light when Ukrainian police started investigations in Cherkasy region. Based on the initial investigations, the team of officials found out that hackers had infected thousands of computers in more than 60 countries in an attempt to steal user data.
The Main Reason That Prompted This Cyber Attack
There are various theories given by different people about this matter, but the fact that hackers had moved a sum of £8000 worth of bitcoins from one of their accounts to another gives a clear idea why they have done it. The investigation team found out a note which contained a message from hackers. It claimed that they were ready to decrypt all the computers which got affected in the cyber attack if the government could pay them a one off payment of £200,000.
From the details that have come out so far, looks like a plain attempt of making money. But experts think otherwise. According to the team of researchers which was keeping a close eye on various hacking activities including this one, the offer made by hackers is an attempt to divert everyone’s attention from the main issue. They wanted to cause a mass distress among local businesses and individuals via this attack. Money was not their primary goal.
What’s Next From Here
As of now, the businesses that got affected by this cyber attack are finding it tough to cope with the situation. But all of them are hopeful that the government will take necessary actions to put all the culprits behind bars. The investigation team has assured that the hackers will meet their destiny soon.
